Bead Mills for MLCC and Electronic Ceramics: Dispersion and Grinding

Bead mills for MLCC barium titanate slurry and electronic ceramics: sub-micron dispersion, contamination control and narrow PSD, with INFOR equipment.

Bead Mills for MLCC and Electronic Ceramics: Dispersion and Grinding

Bead mills disperse and grind the ceramic powders used in MLCCs and other electronic ceramics, such as barium titanate, to sub-micron sizes with a narrow distribution, because thin dielectric layers cannot tolerate coarse particles or agglomerates. Contamination control is just as important: worn metal or bead material changes the electrical properties. INFOR supplies ceramic-lined horizontal mills, screen-free vertical mills and complete ceramic material lines.

What the process needs

RequirementWhy it mattersHow the bead mill meets it
Sub-micron, narrow distributionThin dielectric layers need fine, uniform particlesSmall beads, circulation mode, centrifugal classification
No agglomeratesAgglomerates cause defects in thin layersGood premix and enough dispersion energy
Very low contaminationImpurities change dielectric propertiesZirconia beads, ceramic chambers and rotors
Gentle grinding where neededOver-grinding can damage crystal structureControlled energy and temperature

MLCC slurry

MLCC dielectric slurry combines ceramic powder, solvent, binder and dispersant. The bead mill breaks agglomerates and adjusts particle size so the slurry can be cast into very thin, defect-free sheets.

Other electronic ceramics

Piezoelectric ceramics, ceramic substrates, electrode pastes and ceramic separator coatings have similar needs: fine, uniform particles and minimal contamination.

Contamination control

Ceramic-lined chambers and rotors, yttrium-stabilised zirconia beads and controlled bead wear keep impurities down. See zirconia beads vs glass beads.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Which bead mill is used for MLCC slurry?

MLCC slurry is usually dispersed and ground in ceramic-lined bead mills with small zirconia beads, often in circulation mode, to reach sub-micron particles with a narrow distribution and very low contamination.

How is contamination controlled when grinding electronic ceramics?

With ceramic chambers and rotors, wear-resistant yttrium-stabilised zirconia beads, controlled grinding energy and regular checks of bead wear.

Can INFOR test my ceramic slurry?

Yes. INFOR runs free material tests at its Dongguan and Hubei test bases with lab mills of the same design as its production mills.
