Bead Mills for Printing Inks and Inkjet Inks: Equipment Guide

Bead mills for offset, gravure, flexo and inkjet inks: fineness, oversize control, heat and viscosity, and which INFOR mills suit each ink type.

Bead Mills for Printing Inks and Inkjet Inks: Equipment Guide

Bead mills grind the pigment in printing inks to the fineness each printing process needs: paste inks for offset need full color strength at high viscosity, liquid inks for gravure and flexo need high throughput, and inkjet inks need sub-micron particles with no oversize that could block print-head nozzles. INFOR supplies disc, disc-pin, pin-rod and screen-free vertical bead mills and complete coating and ink lines.

Offset and paste inks

Paste inks combine high pigment content with high viscosity. The mill must keep the paste moving and cool while developing full color strength.

Gravure and flexo inks

Liquid solvent- and water-based inks are lower in viscosity and produced in large volumes, so throughput and explosion protection for solvent systems are the main concerns.

Inkjet and digital inks

Inkjet inks need sub-micron pigment with a narrow distribution, because a few oversize particles can block a nozzle. Small beads, circulation grinding and screen-free separation help, followed by fine filtration. The same applies to ceramic inkjet inks.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What bead mill is used for inkjet ink?

Inkjet ink needs sub-micron pigment with no oversize, so it is usually ground with small zirconia beads in circulation mode, often in a screen-free mill that can hold micro-beads back, and then filtered.

Can one bead mill make different ink types?

A versatile disc mill can handle several liquid ink types, but very viscous paste inks and very fine inkjet inks have different needs. Plants that make both often use different mills or bead sizes for each.

Do solvent-based inks need an explosion-proof bead mill?

Usually yes, depending on the solvent and the site's hazardous-area classification. INFOR disc bead mills are available in explosion-proof versions.
