To choose a bead mill for wet grinding, define the target fineness, pick beads about 1,000 times the target, choose vertical or horizontal and the rotor, size for throughput, select the lining, cooling and seals, then run a lab trial. INFOR (Guangdong INFOR Intelligent Equipment Co., Ltd.) uses LPM and dual-power mills below 100 nm, NCT and NCP for 100-1500 nm, and disc mills for micron coatings.

Step 1: Define the target fineness
Fineness decides most of what follows: bead size, separator type and how much energy the chamber must deliver. Define the target as a distribution (D50 and D90), not a single number, together with the feed particle size, viscosity and solids content.
| Target fineness | Usual bead size | INFOR mill |
|---|---|---|
| 30-1000 nm, including sub-100 nm | 0.05-0.3 mm micro-beads | LPM vertical, screen-free |
| 50-2000 nm with 0.03-0.1 mm micro-beads | 0.03-0.1 mm | Vertical dual-power |
| 100-1500 nm | 0.2-2.0 mm | NCT turbine, NCP pin-rod |
| D50 100 nm-20 µm | 0.3-2.0 mm | Disc |
Step 2: Match the bead size to the target
A common rule of thumb is a bead diameter about 1,000 times the target particle size, so 0.1 mm beads for a 0.1 µm product. Conventional horizontal mills use 0.1-2.0 mm zirconia beads; screen-free vertical mills retain much smaller beads, down to 0.05 mm on the LPM and 0.03 mm on the vertical dual-power mill. Smaller beads always need a separator that can hold them back. Beads usually fill 70-85% of the effective chamber volume. More detail: zirconia beads in bead mills.
Step 3: Choose vertical or horizontal
Choose a vertical screen-free mill when you need very small beads (below 0.1 mm) and nano fineness without screen clogging; in the vertical dual-power layout the material also flows bottom-up through the chamber, avoiding horizontal dead zones. Choose a horizontal turbine or pin mill for high flow, continuous production and a broad fineness window. Orientation alone does not decide performance: rotor, separator and energy density matter as much. See vertical vs horizontal sand mill.
Step 4: Choose the rotor type
- Turbine (NCT): high-energy nano dispersion with a narrow distribution, for carbon nanotubes, nano ceramics and inkjet inks.
- Pin-rod (NCP): high throughput on battery slurries such as LFP, LMFP, carbon black and separator coating.
- Disc: the economical choice for coatings, inks and pigments from D50 100 nm to 20 µm.
- Dual-power: separate motors for the rotor and the separator, so grinding energy and bead separation are set independently; useful with very fine media or changing slurries. See dual-power selection guide.
Step 5: Size for throughput at the target fineness
Size the mill from the output you need at the required D90, in kg/h or L/h, together with the number of passes, not from chamber litres alone. A smaller mill that reaches specification in one controlled circulation can out-produce a larger one that needs repeated passes. For reference, the INFOR catalogue lists feed flows of 300-12,000 L/h across NCP models (6-1000 L chambers) and 2,000-8,000 L/h across LPM models (60-1000 L). Laboratory mills start at 0.3 L (NCT) and 1 L (LPM); see laboratory mills.
Step 6: Choose the chamber lining and control metal contamination
For battery materials, electronic ceramics and other high-purity products, choose a ceramic-lined chamber, such as silicon carbide or zirconia, with ceramic beads, so that metal does not enter the product. INFOR NCT and NCP mills use ceramic chambers (zirconia / silicon carbide; the NCP has a silicon carbide inner chamber), and dual-power mills offer silicon carbide, polyurethane, zirconia and high-purity alumina. For conventional coatings, wear-resistant metal or polyurethane parts may be enough. See preventing metal contamination in LFP plants.
Step 7: Check cooling, sealing and explosion protection
Grinding turns much of the input power into heat, so check that the chamber cooling and the seal cooling circuit can hold the product temperature under full load. INFOR NCT and NCP mills use double-layer cooling water circulation for the grinding barrel plus seal coolant circulation, and the NCT uses a double mechanical seal. Solvent-based products may need anti-explosion models, which are available on the disc mill. Seal options: selecting mechanical seals.
Step 8: Run a lab trial, then scale up
For nano targets, high-viscosity slurries or new formulations, test before you buy. INFOR runs free lab tests on customer material at its Dongguan and Hubei test bases, which have carried out more than 10,000 tests. Its laboratory mills use the same grinding principles as the production series, so a recipe proven on a lab chamber can be transferred to an NCT or LPM production mill.
